1st district - the inner city

The Innere Stadt, the 1st district of the city of Vienna, is one of the most beautiful in the federal capital. It forms the historic core of the Austrian capital Vienna and is home to some of the most famous sights, such as St. Stephen's Cathedral, the State Opera House, Judenplatz, the Vienna Hofburg and the Burgtheater. Most of these sights and buildings are located directly on the Ringstrasse, which symbolises the former city wall from the 13th century.

The Vienna Ringstrasse - subdivision and important buildings

The Ringstrasse is divided into several sections in a clockwise direction of traffic - away from the Urania or Aspern Bridge and starting from the Danube Canal. The first of these sections is the Stubenring, where the former Imperial and Royal War Ministry, the Radetzky Monument and the Museum of Applied Arts are located. This is already followed by the Parkring with several well-known palaces, the Vienna City Park and the Hotel Am Parkring. The next section is the Schubertring, which is particularly famous for Schwarzenbergplatz with the Schwarzenberg Monument. The Kärntner Ring following is perfect for shopping with the Ringstrasse Galleries, and leads into the world-famous Opernring, where the Vienna State Opera is located. This is followed by the Burgring with the Burggarten, the Hofburg, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Naturhistorisches Museum. The Dr. Karl-Renner-Ring comes after the Burgring and houses part of the Volksgarten, the Palais Epstein and the Austrian Parliament. The Universitätsring is the penultimate section, which also houses part of the Volksgarten, the Burgtheater, as well as Vienna City Hall and Vienna University. The last section of the Ringstrasse is the Schottenring, where the Ringturm and the Vienna Provincial Police Headquarters are located.

Summer in Vienna means "life"

Summer is definitely one of the most beautiful seasons in Vienna. The world-famous St. Stephen's Cathedral inspires, as does the Hotel Am Parkring, with an incredible view over the rooftops of Vienna. Perfect for enjoying a romantic evening in the sunset or simply getting an overview of one of the most liveable cities in the world.

The Danube Island - the perfect place for relaxation, exercise and leisure activities © Christian Stemper

The Danube Island is at least as beautiful in summer. It doesn't matter whether you enjoy sports in your free time or prefer to relax in the sun: Danube Island is THE nature recreation area in the middle of the world metropolis. The "island", as it is often called, stretches for more than 20 kilometres and attracts the Viennese and their guests every day in summer.

An absolute highlight in summer is the music festival from July to September. Every year, Vienna becomes the setting for top-class films on the themes of music, opera and theatre. On 65 balmy summer evenings, you can immerse yourself in dance, jazz, world music and musicals and be spoilt by the renowned gastronomes.

Enjoy the cosy autumn in Vienna

Lovers of Viennese wine and typical Viennese cuisine, in particular, will love the Heurigen in Vienna. But tasting enthusiasts and those who want to enjoy cultural experiences are definitely in the right place in Vienna's Heurigen. And if you're planning a day out, the vineyards around Vienna are the place to be, where the typical 'Heurige' - the young wine of the year - is served in small Buschenschänken.

It is almost impossible to list all the theatres in Vienna, but the following are definitely among the most beautiful theatres in Vienna:

  • The Volkstheater is located in the immediate vicinity of Vienna's Museumsquartier and is one of the largest theatres in Vienna.
  • The Theater in der Josefstadt was founded in the 18th century and is considered the oldest theatre in Vienna.
  • In the Kammerspiele in Vienna's first district, you can always experience famous actors live on stage. Whether Senta Berger, Johannes Heesters or Otto Schenk: they have all performed in this popular theatre in Vienna.
  • The Akademietheater in Vienna, which is part of the Burgtheater, regularly wins the Nestroy Theatre Prize with its productions.
  • The countless cellar theatres are always worth a visit - above all the Kabarett Simpl, which is so successful that its performances are practically always sold out.

An absolute highlight for lovers of international and Austrian art is the Upper Belvedere Palace. It houses the most important and largest collection of Austrian artists. The highlight of the exhibition in the Belvedere are the works of the Vienna Secession around Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele - you can marvel at the world-famous "Kiss" or "Judith" here.

Magical Winter in Vienna

Have you heard of Vienna's ice dream? When winter has the city firmly in its grip and the days grow shorter, Vienna comes to life. Festively lit ice rinks, a fairytale winter wonderland, delicious delicacies and fun: you can only get all this at ice skating in Vienna.

And if you want to get in the mood for the Christmas season in a more cosy way, the Christmas markets are definitely the place to be. Roasted almonds, hot chestnuts, delicious mulled wine or a warming punch: at the Christmas markets you are sure to find something to suit your taste. The various stalls with handmade decorative items, such as hand-painted Christmas tree baubles, genuine beekeeper candles made of beeswax or homemade biscuits, are particularly beautiful. A perfect souvenir from Vienna.
