Burgtheater Vienna - a stage with history
Located on Vienna's Ringstrasse, the Burgtheater is one of the most important theatres in Vienna. Built between 1874 and 1888 according to plans by Semper and Hasenauer, it impresses with its magnificent architecture and first-class programme. Productions by well-known authors and directors are on the programme at the Vienna Burgtheater all year round.
Behind the scenes of the Burgtheater in Vienna, stories are told about a house ghost who is said to make his presence felt especially after performances. During the First World War, the theatre was used as an armoury for the Austro-Hungarian army. During the Nazi era, the Burgtheater in Vienna was characterised by political censorship and persecution. Some works were reinterpreted for propaganda purposes or even cancelled. Jewish artists were excluded and had to flee. One actor even worked as a Gestapo informer. In April 1945, the theatre suffered severe damage during an air raid, but the steel structure was preserved.
Despite this history, today the Burgtheater in Vienna is a symbol of cultural diversity and a place of vibrant theatre art in Vienna.

Volkstheater Vienna - a stage for everyone
The Volkstheater in Vienna was founded in 1889 as a bourgeois alternative to the imperial Burgtheater in Vienna. The aim was to give a broad audience access to classical and modern theatre, affordable, direct and in a large auditorium instead of elite boxes. To this day, the Volkstheater in Vienna remains true to this claim.
The Volkstheater was already a pioneer when it opened, as it was completely electrically lit at a time when gas lighting was still common. Dark chapters are also part of the theatre's history. During the Nazi era, a luxurious Führerzimmer was set up in the building as a reception room for Adolf Hitler, who never appeared. Today, this room in the Vienna Volkstheater is used as a place of remembrance and debate.
The Volkstheater experienced a significant moment in 1963 with the performance of Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children. It was the first theatre in Vienna to break the long-standing Brecht boycott, a courageous step in post-war cultural policy. To this day, the Wiener Volkstheater stands for an exciting repertoire between classical, contemporary and social relevance and thus remains a central venue for lively theatre in Vienna.
